When Forgiveness Does Not Mean Returning

Forgiveness is often presented as reunion. We are told that a good heart should understand, excuse, and welcome someone back. But understanding why harm happened does not make the harm safe.

It is possible to stop carrying anger and still keep the boundary. We can wish someone healing from a distance. We can accept an apology without offering the same access to our life.

Returning is a relationship decision. Forgiveness is an internal one. Neither should be forced, and neither should be used to silence the person who was hurt.

Sometimes peace is not two people finding their way back to each other. Sometimes it is one person finally walking forward without turning around.
