What It Means to Make a Home

A home is more than an address. It is the first place where we remove our shoes without feeling like a guest. It is the drawer that slowly fills with our things and the sound of someone moving in another room.

Home can be built with a partner, a family, animals, friends, or solitude. Its true material is safety. We know we can be tired there. We can be uninteresting. We can close the door without wondering whether love will disappear on the other side.

Sometimes making a home also means unlearning. We stop treating peace as temporary. We stop packing emotionally whenever conflict appears.

The most beautiful homes are not perfect. They are lived in, noisy, forgiving places where nobody has to perform belonging.
