The Writer at Night

At night, the world stops asking things from me.

The rooms become quiet. The messages wait. Even the clock seems less certain.

That is when they arrive.

The women I have not named yet. The men carrying secrets. The lovers standing outside doors. The dead asking for one more scene.

I tell myself I will write one sentence.

Morning finds me surrounded by lives that did not exist before midnight.
