The Small Dog Sleeping Beside Me

You sleep beside me as though the world has never frightened you.

As though I have always been here.

Your body is small enough to carry in one arm, but your trust is heavier than anything I have ever held.

You do not know how many times I watch you breathe.

You do not know the promises I make in the dark.

You only move closer, place your head against me, and believe that morning will come because we are together.
