A personal rejection can be sincere. An agent may admire the voice and still decide not to represent the book. Their job is not just to enjoy reading it; they need a credible plan to sell it and enough conviction to keep working when editors say no.

Fit can be the issue

The agent may already have a similar project, lack contacts in the relevant market, or see a book that sits awkwardly between categories. They may love a premise but not the ending, or respect the writing while wanting a different pace from their editorial list.

What the wording can tell you

A specific note about the middle, protagonist, or market is more useful than a general compliment. Even then, one opinion is one opinion. Do not revise for every pass

A book can lose its identity if every rejection triggers a new version. Keep a record of comments and requests. Separate issues that affect clarity from taste. Protect choices you can defend on the page, then revise the weaknesses you can demonstrate.

The next step

Thank the agent when appropriate, follow any invitation to send future work, and continue your thoughtful list. A warm pass is not a secret promise of a later deal, but it can be the start of a professional relationship.
