How Much Can You Make From Your First Novel? The Numbers Behind a KDP Sale

Updated: Oct 9
The seductive number is not your profit
A first novel can make nothing, a small amount, or a substantial income. The honest answer depends on the book and the audience, not the fact that it is a debut. A $4.99 ebook does not put $4.99 in the writer's pocket. A $14.99 paperback does not put $14.99 there either. Before asking how many copies you might sell, calculate what one sale actually pays you and what it cost to make that sale.
An ebook example
Amazon KDP offers 35% and 70% ebook royalty options. The 70% option has eligibility conditions and subtracts applicable VAT and delivery costs. If a U.S. customer buys an eligible $4.99 ebook with no sales tax in the example and a $0.06 delivery charge, the calculation is 0.70 × ($4.99 − $0.06), or about $3.45. That is a hypothetical calculation, not a guaranteed royalty on every sale. Customer location, file size, VAT, price matching, and eligibility can change it. At that illustrative rate, 100 sales yield about $345 before your own expenses and taxes; 1,000 sales yield about $3,450.
A paperback example
Print is different because the book has to be manufactured. KDP says Amazon paperback royalties can use a 50% or 60% rate depending on price and marketplace, and printing cost is then deducted. Its own example for a $9.99 paperback calculates 60% of the price minus $4.60 in printing, leaving $1.39 per sale. Under those exact example assumptions, 100 copies would produce $139 in royalties before cover design, editing, copies, promotion, and tax. A larger book or colour interior can change the printing cost sharply.
The part that gets left out of screenshots
Gross royalties are not profit. If you spend $500 on editing, $250 on a cover, and $150 on proof copies and promotion, you have spent $900. At a hypothetical $3.45 ebook royalty, you would need about 261 ebook sales merely to cover that outlay. The point is not to avoid professional production; it is to know the break-even point before celebrating a sales figure. Time spent writing is another real cost, even if it never appears on a KDP dashboard.
What makes a debut sell?
A book needs a clear promise to a specific reader. Category, title, cover, description, sample pages, and reviews all affect whether someone who sees it decides to buy. Those elements cannot rescue a weak book, but a strong book can also disappear when they misrepresent it. A thriller cover that reads like a romance will attract the wrong click. An opening chapter that postpones the central tension may lose a reader who would have liked the full story.
The useful answer for your own novel
Build three scenarios rather than one dream number: 50 sales, 500 sales, and 5,000 sales. Use KDP's calculator for your exact format and marketplace, then subtract your real costs. Decide what success means for this first book. It may be profit, but it may also be proof of concept, a mailing list, reviews, or a reader base for the second book. Those outcomes deserve separate columns.
